The Comeback Kid: How I Returned to CrossFit at 45 After Years of Injuries

Middle aged man doing deadlifts

Two years ago, I stood outside my old CrossFit gym, staring through the window at people half my age throwing around weights I used to move easily. I hadn't set foot in there for three years.

Not because I'd lost interest. But because my body was a collection of injuries that never quite healed properly, and every time I tried to return, something else would break down.

At 45, I thought my days of intense training were over. I needed to fix the foundation first.

The Injury Graveyard

Let me paint you a picture of my physical state in early 2022. The left shoulder ached constantly from an old rugby injury. My right knee would flare up every time I tried to squat with heavy weights. My lower back seized up if I looked at a deadlift incorrectly. The Achilles tendon has never fully recovered from a running injury.

Each injury had its own story, its own failed rehabilitation attempt, its own reason why it "just wasn't quite right anymore."

I'd done physio. Tried massage therapy. Rested for months at a time. Nothing provided lasting relief. The injuries would calm down, I'd cautiously return to training, and within weeks something would flare up again.

My doctor's advice? "Maybe it's time to consider lower-impact activities. Golf is great exercise."

Golf. At 45. Because my body was apparently too broken for anything more demanding.

The Breaking Point

The moment came during my daughter's birthday party. We were playing backyard cricket, and I bent down to pick up the ball. My back spasmed so severely that I had to lie on the grass for ten minutes while eight-year-olds stared at me in confusion.

That night, my wife gently suggested that maybe my "athletic days" were behind me. She meant it kindly, but it stung because part of me had already accepted it.

But lying in bed that night, I made a decision. I wasn't ready to become the dad who couldn't play with his kids because his body was too broken.

The Research Discovery

I started researching everything about injury recovery and tissue healing. That's when I discovered something that changed my perspective entirely: most of my "chronic" injuries weren't actually healed - they were stuck in incomplete healing cycles.

The inflammation had calmed down, the acute pain had faded, but the underlying tissue damage had never been properly repaired. So every time I put stress on these areas, the partially healed tissue would break down again.

That's when I discovered BPC-157 and TB-500, peptides specifically designed to enhance tissue repair and healing.

The Healing Combination

BPC-157 caught my attention due to its ability to accelerate the healing of tendons, ligaments, and muscle tissue. It's often called "the healing peptide" because of its remarkable ability to speed up recovery from soft tissue injuries.

TB-500 works complementarily. It promotes cell migration to injury sites and helps coordinate the complex process of tissue regeneration. Think of it as the foreman directing the repair crew.

Together, they address both immediate healing needs and the underlying cellular repair processes that had been stuck for years.

What appealed to me was that these weren't masking symptoms - they were helping my body complete the healing process that had stalled.

The Comeback Protocol

I started conservatively: BPC-157 and TB-500 administered via subcutaneous injection each morning. The timing doesn't matter as much as consistency - these peptides work over time to gradually repair and strengthen damaged tissues.

Month 1-2:

The first changes were subtle. That constant background ache in my shoulder started fading. My knee felt more stable during daily activities. The persistent discomfort I'd lived with for years was quietly disappearing.

Month 3-4:

I began with light exercise, including bodyweight movements, gentle stretching, and short walks. For the first time in years, activity didn't immediately trigger flare-ups.

Month 5-6:

I cautiously returned to the gym. Not CrossFit yet - just basic strength training. The difference was remarkable. My shoulder felt solid during pressing movements. My knee tracked properly during squats. My back felt stable and strong.

Month 7-9:

Nine months after starting the protocol, I returned to my old CrossFit gym. Not just to visit - to train. The coach barely recognised me. "You move like you did five years ago," he said after watching me warm up.

The CrossFit Return

My first WOD back was humbling. My conditioning was shot, my strength was down, and I was definitely rusty. But here's what was different: nothing hurt. My shoulder felt rock solid. My knee tracked perfectly. My back remained stable under load.

For the first time in years, I was limited by fitness, not by fear of injury.

Six months later, I'm consistently training four times per week. I'm not lifting the same weights I did at 35, but I'm moving pain-free and getting stronger every week. More importantly, I'm enjoying training again instead of constantly monitoring for warning signs.

The Real Discovery

The biggest revelation was understanding the difference between symptom management and actual healing. For years, I'd been managing symptoms - reducing inflammation, avoiding painful movements, working around limitations.

The peptides allowed my body to actually complete the healing process. Instead of working around my limitations, I was eliminating them.

The Protocol That Worked

My approach was straightforward:

  • BPC-157: 400mcg daily via subcutaneous injection

  • TB-500: 300mcg daily via subcutaneous injection

  • Timing: Both administered in the morning

I used this protocol consistently for nine months, then transitioned to a maintenance approach with lower doses.

The Bigger Picture

At 45, I'm in better shape than I was at 40. Not because I'm stronger or fitter (though I'm getting there), but because my body actually works properly again.

The comeback wasn't just about returning to CrossFit - it was about reclaiming my physical capability and refusing to accept that accumulated injuries were a life sentence.

At Peptide Science Academy, we understand that healing isn't just about reducing pain - it's about restoring function. BPC-157 and TB-500 provide the tools your body needs to complete healing processes that may have been stalled for years.

Your comeback story is waiting. The question isn't whether your body can heal - it's whether you'll give it the support it needs to do so.

Mate this hits different... been carrying around old injuries like battle scars thinking they made me tough or whatever. Turns out I'm just stubborn and my body's been trying to heal this whole time. Gonna order both peptides and see if I can actually fix myself instead of just complaining about everything hurting.

I am glad to read this testimony of the efficacy of BPC175 & TB500. I found yor story of recovering a great encouragement. I look forward to an update in the progressive fitness & strength U gain back & plus the ‘increase’ of strength etc. It must be encouraging to get out & play games with yor kids!

Thank U
